For Caregivers: Client Profile: Marilyn

CHATS caregiver support groups "essential", she says

When Marilyn, a caregiver, first contacted CHATS to inquire about services for her 86-year-old mother, little did she know that ultimately, she herself would benefit from CHATS.

Like many caregivers, Marilyn was experiencing a lot of worry, guilt, irritation and confusion. She and her mother had always had a difficult relationship, and now, as a caregiver, things between them were even more strained and stressful. Marilyn was beyond discouraged; she felt like she was at the end of her rope.

As fate would have it, when she called CHATS, she happened to speak with Lori Ann Canlas, the CHATS Caregiver Education Counselor. Lori listened to Marilyn, visited her and her family at their home, and right away, Marilyn began to feel there was a light at the end of a dark tunnel.

"Lori is fantastic. I can't say enough about her," says Marilyn. "She's very good at bringing things to light; she'll say something and it's like a lightbulb goes off over my head."

Lori's compassion, support and insight led Marilyn to sign up for CHATS caregiver support groups and workshops. Discussions have ranged from practical information about helpful community resources, to communication techniques, to dealing with grief – but, no matter what, it's all about the emotional support, says Marilyn.

"The groups really make us all feel warm and close with one another. We know we're not alone," says Marilyn. "It gives me the strength to continue dealing with my situation."

The opportunity to talk is cathartic, to relate to each other is encouraging and supportive, and listening to others' stories is helpful. There's always something to be learned, on so many levels, notes Marilyn.

"The groups are essential to me. I believe they're the best thing CHATS can do. They are definitely getting through to those who need this kind of support."
