For Seniors: Client Profile
Adele's breakthrough
There's nothing better than seeing a senior blossom, and knowing that we at CHATS helped make it happen. Consider Adele, who joined the Adult Day Program at our Wellness Centre for Seniors and Caregivers in Aurora last year.
Adele, like most of our clients, initially came to us with a heavy depression, feeling alone and isolated. Our clients have experienced so many losses – the loss of a spouse, friends, their driver's license, and some of their physical and mental capabilities.
In Adele's case, her husband had passed away, and she lived alone with no family support. She was painfully withdrawn, insecure and unsure of herself. Despite our gentle encouragement, she didn't participate in any activities; she didn't smile, she wouldn't look you in the eye.
But one day, we spotted her across the room, animatedly chatting away to a couple of other clients, just like they were long-lost friends. She looked up at us and smiled. It was a great feeling.
From there, Adele has simply flourished. She eagerly and happily participates in a variety of activities – yoga, singing, dancing, performing in skits, baking, trivia games… you name it, she's there with bells on. The change has been incredible – the joy is so evident on her face. It really has made a positive difference in her life.
