Pennywise Thrift Shop
Generosity is their business

It could be said that the Pennywise Thrift Shop is in the business of generosity. The Woodbridge-based shop, which has been operating for more than 25 years, pretty much exists to help support charitable organizations.

"Other than paying for rent (for the shop space), all the money made here is donated to organizations like CHATS," explains Ken Stevens, the volunteer treasurer of Pennywise. In fact, over the past nine years, Pennywise has donated close to $9,000 to CHATS – including a recent gift of $2,000.

The shop is entirely operated by a team of 25 volunteers, "most of whom are seniors," notes Helen Poulis, the shop's secretary of the Board. Each year at their annual general meeting, the volunteers decide which organizations will receive donations. CHATS is always top-of-mind, as most volunteers have a personal association with CHATS – about half are CHATS clients, while others are former and current CHATS volunteers.

"Most of us have a long history with CHATS," says Ken, "and we're also getting older and know we need CHATS. CHATS is a friend to us." It just makes sense to give back to organizations like CHATS, says Ken. "It's all about helping make things better for people. That's what we're here to do, and that's what CHATS does. It's a good fit."
